Governor Alex Otti Orders Thorough Investigation into Alleged Extortion, Illegal Sealing of Warehouses in Abia

Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, Abia State* – Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed security agencies to immediately investigate and arrest individuals involved in the harassment, illegal sealing of warehouses, and extortion of traders and shippers in the state.

Governor Otti gave the directive on Thursday while receiving members of the Abia State Shippers Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Olo Onuma, at Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

Reacting to complaints raised by the association, the Governor expressed concern over the alleged activities of hoodlums and persons posing as security operatives, describing it as the first formal report of such incidents brought to his attention.

“There is a government here. Any man who shows up in a warehouse and wants to break in or seal it illegally must be reported immediately,” Governor Otti stated.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring and maintaining law and order, warning that his government would not tolerate extortion, self-help, or any form of lawlessness capable of undermining economic activities and public confidence.

“This matter must be thoroughly investigated, and all those involved must be arrested and made to face the provisions of the law,” he declared, directing his Chief of Staff to ensure prompt and thorough investigation with measures put in place to prevent recurrence.

Governor Otti assured that the majority of Abia residents appreciate the government’s efforts in promoting the rule of law, respect for human rights, and equal opportunities, adding that his administration would continue to act in the best interest of the people.

On the proposed Abia Inland Dry Port project, Governor Otti said the initiative remains strategic but must be economically viable to attract patronage.

“You can build the Dry Port, but if it does not make economic sense to the businessmen who will use it, nobody will patronise it. Until we deal with rail transport and access logistics, it will be difficult to achieve the desired results,” he explained.

He noted that traders and importers naturally prefer routes and facilities that minimise cost and delivery time.

Earlier, Chief Olo Onuma commended Governor Otti for his remarkable achievements within a short period in office, describing them as impressive.

Chief Onuma, however, appealed for urgent government intervention to revive the Abia Inland Dry Port project, stressing its potential to boost international trade and create employment opportunities.

“We urge Your Excellency to bring your Midas touch to bear on this Abia State Inland Dry Port Project. The realisation of this dry port project will enormously enhance our international trade, increase employment within the state and leave further footprints of your administration in the sands of time here in Abia,” he said.

The association chairman decried the growing activities of extortionists, alleging that some hoodlums are colluding with certain government officials to harass members of the association, including artisans, fabric dealers, shoe and bag makers.

He claimed the extortionists extort money from members at warehouses, offices, and during cargo offloading, and specifically alleged involvement of personnel from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and soldiers from the Army Brigade in the state.

Chief Onuma called on the state government to expedite action in tackling the menace, particularly in Aba, and urged greater awareness of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to enable local manufacturers, especially in the garment sector, to tap into export opportunities to the United States.

Governor Otti’s strong stance against extortion and his directive for immediate investigation are expected to reassure investors and traders operating in the state.
